The Secret Place Of The Most High

Psalms 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Read also Psalms 91:1-16.

God’s secret place turns out to be more of a relationship than a specific location. Elsewhere the psalmist wrote, *The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him* (Ps. 25:14). *His secret,* said Solomon, *is with the righteous* (Prov. 3:32). Obviously, then, if we are ever to know God’s secret, we must establish a right relationship with Him... one based on godly fear and reverence, as well as righteousness obtained by faith in Jesus Christ. The closing verses of Psalm 91 make this clear. Note five phrases: (1) he hath set his love upon Me (v. 14); (2) he hath known My name (v. 14); (3) call upon me, and I will answer (v. 15); (4) I will deliver him and honor him (v. 15); (5) with long life will I satisfy him (v. 16). The first key in dwelling in God’s secret place—loving Him with all our heart—is only possible through the indwelling Holy Spirit. *The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Ghost which is given unto us* (Rom. 5:5). Second, to know His name means to know His saving power and to accept Him as Lord of our lives. To know His name means a life commitment, not merely an intellectual exercise. Third, to live in God’s secret place means relying on prayer and its miracle answers. When the psalmist prayed, he received an answer. That answer was, first of all, realizing that the living God was right there with him! The answer also meant deliverance and honor (because he first honored God). And finally, because he was dwelling in God’s secret place, life itself became a long, fulfilling adventure instead of a series of crises and catastrophes!

Small thought here. Most self-help books somewhere contain this thought: every day, plan some solitude for yourself.* For the Christian, that solitude is found, not just in aloneness, but in drawing aside and entering into God’s secret place.
